Ed Allen is an architect who is best known for his books, which seek to bring together aesthetic and technical concerns in building. His Fundamentals of Building Construction and Architect's Studio Companion have been adopted for use in most schools of architecture in North America. Architectural Detailing is the standard text and reference book on the subject. His major teaching appointments have been at MIT and the University of Oregon. In 2005, he was awarded the Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and the AIA, the highest honor in its field.
