Part of the AOP A-1 curriculum includes casting negative spaces out of plaster. Students go through several steps in order to define the negative space through the use of explicit and implicit boundaries.
They start their investigation in drawing form, and sketch paper models, in order to then obtain a mold for their plaster pour. Finally they get to an extensive, exciting day of plaster pouring, where they see their spatial studies taking a new form: going from a powdery consistency to a liquid one and then to a solid one.
All of this happens at a very fast speed and requires monitoring from our AOP studio faculty, but primarily tight collaboration and help among the A-1 students. Check out the photos to learn more about this process and stay tuned for the outcome!
