The Heiress is a dramatic film by Ruth and Augustus Goetz adapted from their 1947 play of the same title that was based on the 1880 novel Washington Square by Henry James. The film was directed by William Wyler with Olivia de Havilland as Catherine Sloper, Montgomery Clift as Morris Townsend, and Ralph Richardson as Dr. Sloper.
This film won four Oscars: Best Actress in a Leading Role (Olivia de Havilland); Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White; Best Costume Design, Black-and-White (Edith Head and Gile Steele); and Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Aaron Copland).
