BuildBoston 2011 Exhibit Hall Picks

BuildBoston is an annual convention that showcases the latest trends in architecture and design. Held at the Seaport World Trade Center on the Waterfront, BuildBoston has an exhibit hall that brings more than 250 suppliers of building products under one roof to showcase their products. We visited the exhibit hall and here are the highlights:

Green:  LiveRoof
LiveRoof incorporates unique modular green roof system that is much more than plant-friendly.  They develop a way to be more efficient in drainage and in design to provide a continuous membrane system that can hold convenient vegetation on the roof. The green roof soil is designed to filter rainwater and barrier acid rain.  This architectural product is slowly working its results in creating the system to even envelope onto the facade of the building, “baby-steps” as a representative said at the convention.

Most Innovative:  Icynene
Icynene provides high performance spray foam insulation solutions and coatings.  The foam insulation is formed to trap any major sources of air leaks and brings advanced moisture management, therefore preventing condensation and a potential mold growth within the walls and ceilings.  Think about it, the energy in savings will increase and the thermal insulation barrier will help optimize heating and cooling!  During the winter months, you know it’s going to be a good deal!

Wild-Card:  Hendrick Architectural Products
Hendrick Architectural Products crafts the most cutting edge metal.  The material is stainless steel, copper nickel, and aluminum that provide an extremely modern commercial architecture around the world.  There is perforating, screening, and fabricating types of metal design that can be easily be adjusted to any function you desire (stairwells, lighting covers, landscaping, interior and exterior panels, and much more). You might even see this type of product in one of Bjarke Ingels designs with his famous perforated metal in the Mountain Dwellings project.

Walls:  KC&A Natural Stone Contractor
Kenneth Castellucci & Associates is the rare, single-source contractor of natural stone.  The stones they install are initially to barricade the exterior of a building with the intention of keeping and forcing out water going into any interior.  It is simply constructed to fit with traditional wall cavity, steel membrane, and the insulation of the interior.  Fun fact the Trinity Church, North and South Market Building of Faneuil Hall were all restored by KC&A’s stone carvings.

Best Prizes:
CCI Building Restoration & Water Proofing
CCI Building Restoration & Water Proofing, for all you Historic Preservation majors, focuses on restoring and maintaining buildings and lost art.  They provide masonry, roofing, windows, and concrete restoration and cleaning.  What caught my attention: "leave a business card for a chance to win Boston Bruins tickets!"

Graphics and Advertising Design:
Nanolumens is a company dedicated to designing and engineering by assembling ultra-slim, lightweight, eco-friendly and flexible LED displays.  These displays can transform ordinary spaces into great visual spaces, simply by plugging in a laptop or any div video; no special software necessary.  It is the most brilliant graphic presentation which can be shown inside and/or outside, created in a perforated material that can be mounted in any size and shape onto curving contoured walls and structures.  Delivering advertising to a whole new level in retail spaces, stadiums, lobbies, malls, and many more areas that you can allow it to be digitally used!

Most Unexpected:  Atlas Watersystems
Atlas is a dedicated water filtration system company.  What shocked me the most is the idea that design can come in many shape and form; this happens to be a mechanical system that might be running in your home.  It is installed in many commercial and residential buildings in Boston, Newton, Cambridge and have been expanding across Massachusetts and nearby states for the past 15 years.  Marc Ouellet, a representative from Atlas, have been using the water system for himself and his family, it’s treating him very well.

Must See Equipment: Dyson Air Multiplier
You know Dyson for its powerful vacuum cleaner I am sure, but they also have other products. Air Multiplier by Dyson is a revolutionary fan and fan heater, using Air Multiplier™ technology to draw in and amplify surrounding air. There are no fast-spinning blades or visible heating elements, so there’s no need for safety grilles. They project a stream of smooth air, to cool or heat the room.

Quality Product Design: Philips Color Kinetics
Philips Color Kinetics by PHILIPS offers professional LED lighting systems in a multitude of types, form factors, and output levels. Color-changing, tunable white, solid white, and solid color LED lighting fixtures deliver high-quality, digitally controllable light in the full range of interior and exterior architectural and entertainment applications.

Acoustics: 2 companies stood out as offering
innovative sound absorbing products
Ecophon Solo by ECOPHON, which introduces geometrical shapes such as ellipses, pentagons and circles, to give the ceiling a whole new aesthetic dimension, rather than the déjà vu 2x2 traditional panel. Easy to install, it comes in a wide variety of colors to achieve the results you are after.

Starsilent by PYROK is a smooth seamless sound absorbing, durable plaster finish system for walls and ceilings. It is made up of 96% post consumer recycled crushed glass bottles and coated with sound permeable plasters. This environmentally friendly product allows designers to utilize a seamless gypsum board look with sound absorbing qualities. It is utilized in many configurations that gypsum board is typically utilized. It can be used on curved surfaces with a radius of four feet or greater.

Innovation Pavilion: provides a venue for new and innovative products to join the establishment event. Products showcased here have been in the market place for less than three years. There were a total of twenty eight products, and three drew my attention.

Pixels is a unique process that creates custom perforated images from photographs, brand logos or geometric shapes. This enables the creation of signature graphic designs on metal ceilings and wall-mounted panels, which means limitless possibilities for almost any space.

Pilkington Spacia™ is the world’s first commercially available vacuum glazing. It offers the thermal performance of conventional double glazing in the same thickness as single glass (6 mm). Pilkington Spacia™ provides a real solution to the problems of balancing historical preservation with modern comfort and environmental requirements.

Sivoia QS is a wirelss shading system that offers precision control of shades in one room, multiple rooms, or an entire home or building all at the touch of a button.
