Competition :: Threshold: Portals to the Future
Register by Friday January 6, 2012 at 5 pm
The AIAS / VT Industries Threshold design competition is developed around the theme of looking at the doors of the future in all of their facets: energy passage, security, universal accessibility, physical composition, and most of all design.
The guidelines for this competition are strict as the doors need to be appropriate to a real world installation and manufacturing capabilities, however the AIAS and VT Industries invite students to explore concepts within those specifications and design a door that will become an icon and set the stage for the next generation to associate with transition from one place to another.
This competition has two design options. Participants can select one or the other – or attempt both designs.
Option 1: Doorway to the AIA/Library of Congress Reading Room
Option 2: Doorway to the Office of the President of the AIAS
Participants may select to participate by designing for one door or both. Groups of students are acceptable to a maximum team size of four. A winning entry will be selected overall first. THEN, a “runner up” in EACH category will be selected, as well as three honorable mentions. Both doors must be custom wood doors with veneers and finishes.
