Common Boston: PUBLIC SPACE/PUBLIC ART

Common Boston Request for Proposals
Common Boston: PUBLIC SPACE/PUBLIC ART
South End :: June 15-23, 2012
publicart@commonboston.org

PUBLIC SPACE/PUBLIC ART, a new initiative sponsored by Common Boston, is designed to be a floating gallery of site-specific art installations placed throughout Boston’s South End. It will bring together the worlds of architecture, art, urban design, and community engagement by displaying the vigor and rigor of Boston’s practitioners and its neighborhoods – in this case, the historically significant South End. With this inaugural show, Common Boston hopes to begin a sustained collaboration among Boston’s designers, artists, and civic leaders.

Common Boston seeks only projects designed to occur in public space and involving an element of civic engagement. A range of media will be considered, including two- and three-dimensional fine art, graphic design, art installation, dance/performance, music, and film. Featured artists will be chosen by a curatorial committee of multidisciplinary artists and designers through a two-step process.

To begin, they solicit conceptual proposals from you and other artists/institutions. After reviewing initial proposals, selected artists will be asked to respond to committee members’ questions in a more detailed proposal. The curatorial committee will then review and make a final selection of artist proposals. Common Boston will collaborate with and assist artists to realize their vision for the floating gallery installation.
