Welcome from Marcus Hamblin, Atelier President 2012-2013

Dear Fellow Students,

I am so excited to begin a new year here at the Boston Architectural College! I want to welcome those of you who are new, and welcome back those who are returning. There are countless good things about a new school year, and I can’t wait for us to experience them together.

Atelier, YOUR Student Government and our campus Student Organizations have wonderful activities planned this year. You can get involved with the professional organizations for Architecture (AIAS), Interior Design (Interior Design Society – ASID & IIDA), Landscape Architecture (SASLA), or the National Organization for Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS.) There are also opportunities to socialize and network with our LGBTQ organization, Studio Q. Any of these are valuable avenues for making friends, finding out about practice opportunities, and building a network that will support you throughout your BAC career and beyond.

As members of Atelier, our mission is to create an atmosphere full of growth, cooperation, unity, and fun. As part of this, we allocate where the Student Activity Fee is spent. Email us at any time, or seek us out on campus to give us ideas or ask us what’s happening. We would love to meet you. Our mission cannot be fulfilled without your contribution. Come to a First Friday event for free appetizers and a look at some of Boston’s great new restaurants, join us during Food for Finals, and attend the Student Lecture Series. We promise a good time.

The BAC is an exciting place in a vibrant city. Construction is underway to finish the first floor of the 951 Boylston Street building. This will open up a new face to Boston, and make our campus that much more vibrant. If you have noticed the machinery behind 320 Newbury Street, the BAC is part of an initiative to make our neighborhood more sustainable by drilling geothermal wells.

The basement of 320 Newbury Street is also the home to a new CNC machine. This summer, Atelier sponsored a competition to redesign the laser cutting space. This will make a great new home for the BAC’s new laser cutter, and will be a great addition to our fabrication capabilities. Design is inspiring, and is constantly changing. The BAC gives you the opportunity to be at the forefront of it.

So again, welcome and welcome back! Good luck with your upcoming classes. Together, let's make this year a great one!
