IHCD Hosts a Community Conversation on the U.S. Department of Education Guidance on Equal Opportunity in Sports for Students with Disabilities
On January 25, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights released guidance that clarifies existing legal obligations of schools to provide students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate alongside their peers in after-school athletics and clubs.
This guidance makes clear that schools may not exclude students who have an intellectual, developmental, physical, or any other disability from trying out and playing on a team, if they are otherwise qualified. This guidance builds on a resource document the Department issued in 2011 that provides important information on improving opportunities for children and youth with disabilities to access physical education and athletics.
On February 20th at the Institute for Human Centered Design, Eli Wolff and Dr. Ted Fay of the Inclusive Sports Initiative will discuss both general and specific implications on this guidance, as well as facilitate a community conversation on strategies for education, awareness raising and implementation.
To RSVP or for accommodations please contact Willa Crolius, Coordinator of Public Programs at 617.259.1655 or via email. Food and drink will be provided.
