Blog Pick :: Elements of Style

By Alyce Packard, BID Candidate

The Elements of Style blog was founded in 2007 by Interior and Fashion Stylist Erin Gates. It is for readers all over the country that want some design inspiration or advice. She combines interior design and fashion with pop culture. She communicates in a very down to earth way and she seems really easy to relate to. Her comments are funny while being useful and clever.

This blog is great to scroll through for some inspiration for anything. I actually used some of her prints for a school project and I'm sure if you were looking to re-design your home you could get some great ideas from her. She encourages interaction with her posts asking if people have been to the places that she's featuring or she'll ask your advice on a color or product that she is choosing. People comment on the post sharing their experiences which sparks a discussion that she gets involved in.

My favorite thing is the post about her own house. She has a few posts about the status of her house with pictures. She shows us the process of what's being done and what she's using to do it. The picture above is an example of her bathroom. She showed us what the bathroom looked like before anything was done to it, what the wallpaper she chose looked like, and with this picture she shows us the room re-done with the wall paper hung.

The pictures above were part of her most recent update in which she discusses the status of her kitchen. As a student, I think it's really cool to see the process of a design instead of just the before and after pictures. Her caption for the picture above is "The grout has not been applied yet but it is the same grey color as the cabinets. I love how crisp and clean it looks. And the brass hardware, which I was doubting as well, now pops." I think this is even more helpful because she explains that she was not sure about something but now that she's further along in the design process she can see that she was correct in her decision with the brass hardware.

I also really liked the recent entry she did about a hotel that she wants to visit. She dedicates several posts to really well designed spaces that she'd like to go to. The pictures above are of The Greenwich Hotel in New York City. These rooms were designed by Grayling Design and they did an excellent job in making the rooms unique and fun while still remaining "homey." They've really figured out how to combine bright colors and textures while keeping it classy and luxurious.
