This Long Studio explores its concept by designing a building that embodies the idea: "There is only 'us.'" It's part of an answer given by internationally recognized Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez when she was traveling in Europe some years ago. Someone asked, "You're from Cuba? From what Cuba?" Her answer: "Chico, I'm from the Cuba of José Martí." As part of the studio we will explore Cubans and their culture as seen from both within and outside the island.

The building to be designed is a hospitality training hotel similar to the former Stonington Beach Hotel in Bermuda. The program consists of guest facilities as well as dormitory space for students of the Colegio Universitaria San Gerónimo in La Habana Vieja. Guest rooms will cater to international visitors. The design goal for the hotel is that all its residents (guests and student workers) experience "the Cuba of José Martí."

The site of for the hotel is one recommended by the Cuban architect and planner, Mario Coyula. It is on a piece of derelict waterfront in Casa Blanca just west of the Hershey Trolley terminal and Terminal of the Lanchita de Casa Blanca, in the shadow of the Cabaña Fortress.

In the first four weeks of the studio students will study Cuban culture as well as building technologies used in Cuba. This work will be followed by a trip to La Habana, Cuba and Miami, Florida to meet with Cubans and Cuban Americans for cultural exchange and to study significant works of architecture and urban design on both sides of the Straits of Florida. After the investigative trip, Students will propose concepts for the building and then create a full schematic design for it, including all building systems.
