On Wednesday October 30, 2013, BAC Mentoring, along with the Practice Department, hosted an Emerging Professional Development Workshop for first-year, CityLab students.

Close to 30 mentors, Practice Faculty, and BAC Alumni were on hand to give valuable advice for the students. Peer Mentors Shokofeh Darbari and Thomas Merchel also participated as part of our pilot Peer Mentoring Program.

Esteemed Practice Faculty member, Elaine Bello, began the evening with a presentation on the value of mentoring, drawing upon decades of personal experience in mentoring and being mentored. Elaine first joined the BAC team in 1979 with an eye towards developing the Interior Design Program.

In a series of smaller, round-robin discussions, students got a chance to ask questions about the design world from diverse professionals with many years of experience. Questions such as “What experiences to you have that you are proud of?” and “Talk about a time you had to work with someone with a different work style than yours. How did you navigate this experience?” made for a thought-provoking, lively night.

Our participants filled Cascieri Hall and flowed out into the Loft and lobby area of 320 Newbury Street. Jordan Alexander and Christina Liu, co-organizers of the BAC Mentoring/Peer Mentoring Program, are appreciative towards all who made the event such a joyful success.
