Previously, Lai lived and worked in a desert shelter at Taliesin and resided in a shipping container at Atelier Van Lieshout on the piers of Rotterdam. In 2012, Lai won the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects. His installation, White Elephant, is in the permanent collection of the Museum by Modern Art. Lai is the winner of the inaugural Millenium BCP Lisbon Triennale Début Award. In 2014, Lai designed and curated the Taiwan Pavilion for the 2014 Venice Architectural Biennale.
